The 507 has been launched as a last hurrah for the C63 AMG, which, with the new C-class being shown at Detroit 2014, is at the end of its run. Since 2007, the C63 (launched as a saloon and estate, initially) has been one of the lairiest, most entertaining performance cars on the road, taking the fight to one of our other favourites – the outgoing BMW M3 – and often winning on character and thrills if outperformed in terms of overall dynamic polish. To make the 507, Mercedes has fettled the 6208cc V8 engine with parts from the fire breathing SLS AMG to increase power from 470bhp to 510bhp, while torque has been upped a mere 8lb ft to 450lb ft. The C63 and the SLS – which bookend the range – use two versions of the naturally-aspirated V8 (the M156 and M159 for the trainspotters) and remain the only two models not yet using the newer, cleaner (less characterful) twin-turbo V8. In a straight line, it lops off the standard coupe’s 0-62mph time for a official claim. That’s better than the outgoing BMW M3’s claim, better than the Audi RS5’s time and only behind the new BMW M4 coupe’s number (for the fastest, twin-clutch version) as well. Top speed for the 507 is limited, but not to the usual 155mph – you can stretch this Merc’s legs to 174mph on its native autobahns when permitted… Any other changes? Inside, not much has changed – there’re the excellent leather sports seats – both brilliantly bolstered and supportive – and the Alcantara-wrapped three-spoke AMG steering wheel that, for the 507, has a red ‘straight ahead’ you’ll spot the unique, elegant five-spoke charcoal 19in alloys and the black roof (mimicking the BMW M3’s genuine carbon top) that all C63 coupes wear, as well as the red calipers that squeeze carbon-ceramic brakes. The 507 also has gloss black vents and detailing, plus a pair of power domes up front – that’s the bonnet from the C63 Black Series. Yet this isn’t a car that’s put a sock down its drawers… What’s it like to drive? Madness. The C63 has that satanic bark that’s unmatched by anything beyond the AMG family. Only the Maserati GranTurismo V8 comes close to the thunder from the C63’s quad exhausts pipes, and while the BMW M3 has a sophisticated, metallically snarling V8 under the outgoing E92 model, the AMG is the baddest sounding coupe this side of a bikie gang. The seven-speed G-tronic ’box is accessed by beautifully finished metal levers, and the extra punch packed by that masterful V8 makes what’s already a ferocious, tyre-frying monster into the ultimate entertainment. Like we said of the SLS, there’s few cars that can mix capability with entertainment, and although we’d pick an M3 over the Merc for cutting laps, the C63’s miniscule dynamic deficiency is forgotten – it’s still a stellar performer with loads of grip, brilliant change of direction and a throttle sharper than a cut diamond. This is a car thank links corners with precision, ferocity and poise while telling the world about. It’s unashamedly brash, and we love it for that alone. Verdict: is the 507 worth it? The extra coin for this special model – £10K more, for a list price of £68,470 if you want the coupe (saloon and estate versions are on offer, too) – isn’t worth it in terms of pace or performance. It’s like giving a Rottweiler an extra few teeth: better, but not for a dramatically different result. Yet if you’re after something a little exclusive, the 507’s that bit more special and is a superb performance car under all that bravado. Called C63 AMG "Edition 507" – the “507” is a clear indication of the engine’s output - the new model will use much of the same technology as the SLS AMG supercar. The new elements - including forged pistons, connecting rods and a lightweight crankshaft - will transform the new "Edition 507" into a more powerful, yet lighter sports model. The new C63 AMG "Edition 507" will also be distinguished by design elements seen on models like the C63 AMG Coupe Black Series. These extra styling elements combined with the anticipated power hike definitely get our attention. So, if you happen to be one of those crazy people that think the 451-horsepower C63 AMG is just a little too timid for you, the "Edition 507" just might be the car for you. Or maybe you would prefer a fighter jet; better yet, a rocket ship… Yeah, that may satisfy your itch for speed! There will be an aluminum hood with two wide openings for better engine cooling, a spoiler on the trunk lid and, of course, a set of light-alloy forged wheels. Customers can choose between two sets of wheels: one offered in titanium grey with a high-sheen finish and the other one in matte black with high-sheen rim flanges. Both, however, come wrapped in high-performance tires sized 235/35R19 up front and 255/30R19 on the backside. Other distinctive elements will include a sports stripe applique in matte graphite and high-gloss black appliques on the exterior mirrors, the radiator-grille and daytime running light surrounds. For the new "Edition 507", Mercedes developed an exclusive designo magno platinum matte finish paint, which will be offered as an option. Interior The interior continues with the same exclusive feeling as the exterior. Customers can choose between three different interior setups: porcelain designo leather/DINAMICA, black designo leather/DINAMICA and black designo leather. Along with these choices, each model will be offered with an AMG Performance steering wheel in Alcantara combined with a gear selector lever in Dinamica. On the instrument cluster, the trim is done in high-gloss black piano lacquer combined with red applications to the dials. The final elements are, of course, the "Edition 507" badge on the trim on the front passenger side. Optional extras: AMG illuminated door rocker panels AMG rear axle locking differential AMG 5-spoke light-alloy forged wheels, painted in titanium grey and with a high-sheen finish, with tires in sizes 235/40 R 18 (front) and 255/35 R 18(rear) AMG Performance Media AMG carbon-fiber/high gloss black piano lacquer-look trim Exterior designo magno platinum matte finish paint; four other exterior paint colors will be available from the existing C63 AMG Under the hood, Mercedes has installed an AMG V-8 engine with technologies inspired by the SLS AMG supercar. The V-8 engine has been equipped with forged pistons, new connecting rods and a lightweight crankshaft. All these new elements helped save pounds, but also considerably increased the engine’s output. The engine hooks up to a AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission that delivers power to the rear wheels. As a result the new "Edition 507" delivers a total of 507 horsepower and a peak torque of 450 pound-feet. With the extra 50 horsepower, the model will sprint from 0 to 60 mph in just seconds and up to a top speed of 174 mph. Brake System In order to handle the extra power, the new "Edition 507" has been equipped with an AMG high-performance braking system, which features compound-construction technology that makes it lighter and improves the response of the spring elements. On the front axle, Mercedes installed discs sized inches x inches connected with six-piston aluminum fixed calipers. The brake calipers are painted red on both models. Prices On the market the C63 AMG "Edition 507" sedan is priced at $70,000 (plus $925 for destination and delivery) and the coupe at $72,500 (plus $925 for destination and delivery). Mercedes did not release the anticipated delivery date for the "Edition 507". Pricing In Germany, the C 63 AMG "Edition 507" starts at €83, in Saloon format and tops out at €86,395 in its Estate format. The "Edition 507" model hit dealers in June 2013. German Pricing Competitors BMW M3 GTS With its 507-horsepower output level, the Mercedes C63 AMG "Edition 507" has left its usual competitors well behind. In fact, there is no standard BMW M3 out there with the same output level. Not even the GTS version is not as powerful as the new "Edition 507". It is powered by a liter V-8 engine with an output of 450 horsepower. The M3 GTS sprints from 0 to 60 mph in just seconds and can hit a top speed of 189 mph, which makes it seconds slower to 60 mph, but gives it a top speed that is 15 mph faster. Conclusion If you are looking for a more powerful C63 AMG, the new "Edition 507" is definitely the car for you. It offers technologies from the SLS supercar and of course, has pretty much no competition on the market. Still, as we have no prices just yet, we cannot tell if the car really worth.
